Initiatives

We investigate broken systems – and build things to help fix them.

Signol Labs develops practical architectures, tools, and resources for problems that no single employer, educator, technology company, or workforce organization can solve alone.

We investigate how these systems actually work, develop ideas in public, and invite others to test, challenge, and build on what we create.

Hiring isn’t one decision. It’s a series of decisions about who gets human attention.

Before a hiring manager ever meets a candidate, job boards, talent marketplaces, applicant tracking systems, recruiters, and other systems have already made decisions that determine who gets through.

What if we could make those decisions better?

The Hiring Decision Architecture is an open framework for understanding what employers are trying to learn about people, what information and evidence could help them learn it, and where that information could improve decisions throughout the hiring process.

It provides a shared framework for understanding what employers are trying to learn about people, what information and evidence they can trust, and where better signals could improve hiring decisions.

HEAR HOW WE GOT HERE

Fix the System

We spent a season talking with recruiters, hiring managers, talent marketplaces, job boards, and hiring technology companies about how hiring decisions actually get made.

The conclusion wasn’t that we need to teach every human to hire differently.

We need to give the systems deciding who reaches those humans better information to work with.

HOW WE BUILD

Investigate -> Architect -> Text -> Share

We start with questions. We study how systems actually work. We turn what we learn into practical models and tools. Then we put them into the world so others can test, challenge, and improve them.

Research in Public

We don’t believe all of this work should happen behind closed doors. We share questions, conversations, early ideas, and working models publicly so others can learn from—and contribute to—the investigation.

The Signal Lab

Our podcast is one of the ways we research in public.

Each investigation starts with a question about the signals, systems, and infrastructure connecting people to opportunity. Rather than waiting until we think we have the answer, we bring listeners into the process—talking with experts, testing assumptions, and sharing what we’re learning along the way.

Sometimes those investigations produce new questions. Sometimes they produce new ideas. And sometimes, as with the Hiring Decision Architecture, they produce something we believe is worth building on.

Build With Us

The problems we’re interested in solving cross traditional boundaries between education, workforce development, employers, technology, and data infrastructure.

If you’re working on one of these problems—or see something in our work that could be stronger—we’d like to hear from you.

The Signal Lab Podcast

The Signal Lab explores how learning, work, identity, and technology are reshaping the way we understand human potential.

Through conversations with educators, employers, technologists, policymakers, and learners, we examine the signals that connect people to opportunity—and the systems that interpret them.

Each episode builds on the last, creating a connected exploration of the infrastructure of opportunity.
